I have an ancestor I descend From His name was Benjamin Carven Heard this website: https://www.djhooker.com/5/1209.htm Claims he served in the civil war however I'm having a hard time confirming this. I found these papers detailing someone named Benjamin C Heard but how to I confirm is this was really him?

The first thing I would try to find out is did this person live in the county that company B recruited from. That would narrow things down a bit. If you use a site like Ancestry, there will likely be other service related records that would confirm or deny this as a possible match.

Hope this helps,

Dave.

How do I find where company B originated I'm pretty sure Ben lived in the Choctaw territory so it would make sense for him to serve in this regiment. But other than context clues is there any definitive way to say for sure?

They were formed at Scullyville in the Choctaw Nation - that's now in Oklahoma, though Skullyville itself it pretty much gone, according to the Oklahoma History Site. If you look on the card you shared you can see it says this man enlisted at Sugar Loaf. That was a county of the Choctaw Nation. Both Skullyville and Sugar Loaf County were where LeFlore County now is.

1) Check the Federal Census for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 to track his location.

2) Didn't find his name pop out in these transcriptions for the Choctaw territory, but don't take my word for it -
The 1860 Federal Census of Indian Territory

3) This Find A Grave has some effort behind it.

Check the right hand side for Ancestry links - the 1850 and 1880 Federal Census look legit but the TX and AR death certificate repositories are for time windows after his death in 1888. :whistling:
