Does the 89th NC actually exist?

Column Three, very bottom of page there is a reference to 89th NC.

Nothing startling here, but as a contemporary newspaper report it answers (at least in part) your original question about whether the 89th was recognized as an active military organization at the time.
I appreciate your help, and all of the other help people have given so far. As our friend "story" mentioned above, it's odd that they'd be stationed outside of the state, isn't it?

That kind of plays into my other question. If the 89th was a recognized militia group tasked primarily with tracking down deserters in the mountains (as the news clipping in my original post suggests), might that have been what they were doing in Tennessee?
 
This is great info, my 5th Gr. Grandfather Joseph Franklin Bollinger is said to have been a 1st Lieutenant of the 89th NC Regt, but it also has in brackets ''4th North Carolina Senior Reserves'', it's always gotten me real confused
