Troy Harmon's lecture today on Pickett's Charge

As the place was overcrowded and I am not too good standing on my feet for too long, I did not see all of the lecture today. I ducked out a couple times to catch a quick look at Cope's map to try to catch angles and view lines when Troy was discussing his long held theory that Lee was not aiming at the center of the line down Cemetery Ridge on Day 3, but at Cemetery Hill itself (and the famous Copse of Trees was irrelevant). I am not convinced of the correctness of his opinion but I also never really got to hear his thoughts on what his topic was supposed to be - i.e.. the second wave at Pickett's Charge.

Did anyone else attend? Any thoughts, and can you fill me in on what Troy said after 2:30 or so about the "second wave"?

It is to bad many lectures like this can't be recorded and posted online for others to enjoy. I suppose the cost and logistics of doing so makes it prohibited.

I was there. Troy made a very persuasive case. He quoted directly from the reports of various confederate officers as to what they had been ordered to do. Anderson specifically wrote he was part of a second wave but was told by Longstreet that since the attack had failed he shouldn't step off.

Sounds interesting... have you read his book?

What did Longstreet say about it ? As to Anderson's statement ?

They are on Youtube. Go to www.nps.gov/gett, then click on the Youtube link on the left of the screen. It'll take a few days for Troy's talk to get there, but others from this season are there.

I haven't read Troy's book - just haven't gotten around to it. So many books, so little time. I was aware of what Longstreet told Anderson, but since I wasn't able to stay for the whole talk, I had trouble putting together what Troy said during the first hour of his talk with how he was addressing the "second wave." When it's posted on Youtube I will try to listen all over again and all the way through. Then I will corner Troy some time and get him to elaborate on anything I didn't follow.

So far only three are posted on YouTube from this year. Kaitlyn is doing the editing this year and she's busy with her ranger duties and can only get to them in her spare time. They had a full-time volunteer doing it last year but he's not there this year.
