Hi,
if anyone would enjoy chatting about any of the trivia questions that have been posted I would enjoy it. Sometimes after posting a question I have questions or more info I've found I'd love to share. I'd love to hear your comments as well. Thanks,
SAR

Good Old Mom: I have to admit that in regards to General Thomas Lanier Clingman and his mom telling him how to wash his underwear when he was 53 years did make me chuckle. If anyone has info on Civil War laundering methods I would love to hear of it. It would enlighten me as to the letter being written. Thanks.

Deul Anyone!: :cannon:Ah, yes deuling over toothbrushes! Really!

I raided Colin's CW bookshelf and found this gem. :bounce::wavespin::bounce::wavespin:

The Civil War: Strange and Fascinating Facts, Burke Davis, 1960, Barnes & Noble Publishing, Page 136.
This book had been published previously and entitled Our Incredible Civil War by Holt, Rhinehart, and Winston, Inc.

Twins: :twins: It appears to be more like quintuplets....:twins:
James Rains aka Gabriel J. Rains, Mansfield Lovell, CSA Brig. Gen. George Morgan and CSA Gen. William Miller, and the winner of the name, Mr. Burnsides. There may be more BACWB (see links) below.
Regarding all this facial hair or "facial fungus" as one CWT member wrote.
Famous facial hair !! :grant: :lee:!!
Thanks for all your humor and comments! I enjoyed them so much. I liked the photo of the young Burnsides.
Thanks for sharing Mayor McCheese!!!

Good job, SAR! They've been fun, and I too chuckled for awhile at the "underwear washing lecture from his mother:giggle:".I LOVE dogs, but that one was tricky for me. The first dog that came to mind, was________, but then I looked further, and there was another that could "fit the bill". I was doing fine up 'til then. Overall, though, nice work! (Then I found out--too late-it was the donkey:banghead:)

Good stuff SAR, I really enjoy searching out some of the more obscure stuff. Trivia has become part of my breakfast coffee routine, and even my wife who is only partially ACW orientated has been getting involved. You are doing fine.

An earlier posting time would be helpful here. Earlier in the evening or sometime during the day?
Does anyone else have a preference?

The funny thing is the page at the top states 9pm and then I believe the Trivia Rules page states 9:30pm if I'm correct. However, in the message to me states 21:30 which is translated to 9:30. I'm not the one that set the time. I think Mike may be the person to ask.

Well, that is nice to hear...if Trivia can get someone interested that is somewhat interested and gets them more interested that's great.

Thanks for your reply, SAR.

SAR, you listed this http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21277335 in your last post for the "Twins" question. What do you mean that Gabriel James Rains went by both names? What both names are you saying were shared by one man? I take it you have not seen this?- http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=rains&GSfn=gabriel &GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=9253&df=all&

There is no doubt that there were 2 distinct men named Rains who served the Confederacy. Both were Brigadier Generals. The question is, which Rains is pictured in this photo?

Here is a CWT thread from over a year ago, where a member has asked for a photo of James Spencer Rains. He explains the existing confusion over the photo in question. No one to date has come up with a photo of James S. Rains. http://civilwartalk.com/threads/searching-a-picture-of-gen-james-s-rains.96336/#post-1083777

I've searched and searched and cannot come up with a photo of James S. Rains. However, I have found multiple sources that list the above photo as that of Gabriel James Rains:
http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/cwp2003004448/PP/
http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/strong_strph17004/
http://gabrielrains.com/seminole-war-1840/

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=9253
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0093TNFWY/?tag=civilwartalkc-20
and also wiki

I think the problem in the case of members' answers of James to the "Twins" question of id-ing the photo is due to the fact that when you enter the above photo in google image search, it comes back as James S. Rains. But then if you check the sources listed, you see that they are unreliable at best for James. I was going to answer James as well, until I read ALL of the listed sources. Then the fact of the confusion was obvious.

Using Tineye Image search, returns 7 results. 6 of the 7 list Gabriel James Rains. The only source id as James S. Rains is a blog. ALL other sources say the id is Gabriel James Rains.

I think this one is going to have to remain a draw.

Thank you, Littlestown. If I have learned anything from the old Trivia then it is to carefully check which sources are serious.
I also think it is Gabriel James who was born in 1803, while James Spencer was born in 1807.

SAR, I'm so thankful that you are willing to do this job!
I have sometimes given wrong answers, unfortunately, and they always were close misses. The battle where Ewell lost his leg for example.... I thought me clever to answer 2nd Manassas, because that is the battle erveryone knows. I should had taken the first answer that popped up, it would have been the correct one. Or the one concerning that Confederate officer who was sent to London ... I had found the correct answer also, but decided to opt for the wrong one. Pity. But Trivia sure is fun, and I should try to be more relaxed about it.
Anyway, thank you so very much, again!

Yes, many thanks to SAR for taking on this endeavor.

And I have also learned about checking and rechecking, and triple checking sources. :frantic:

And @FarawayFriend, wasn't James Spencer born in 1817? I have his birth/death dates as - October 2, 1817 – May 19, 1880.

Of course you are right, Littlestown! I'm sorry, I have written that from memory and did not look it up again, hahaa, my memory is not a reliable source at all. Yes, 1817 is correct!
