Hi! I'm new to this site, and I'm hoping you all have lots of info you can share with me on the topic I'm trying to research.
I'm writing a historical fiction book, and I am trying to figure out if it is plausible for one of my characters to travel by train in the South within the first year of the start of the Civil War. Here are some of my main questions to start with:
1. Does anyone have knowledge about the train lines that went from Macon, Ga to Savannah, GA? How often did they run? Did they carry passengers or only freight?
2. If a white man wanted to travel by train in the South with his personal slave (1861) how would the slave have to travel? In a separate car? In a freight car? With the master?
3. How frequently would the train stop and for how long? I think Macon to Savannah is only about 3.5 hours. Would the train have potentially gotten there that fast or would there be long layovers in between?
