That serial number signifies that it was made in 1889.

The Buffington rear sight, which was the first one to compensate for windage and elevation, was introduced on the Model 1884. Your's is perhaps the Model 1888, which had the rod type bayonet before it was cut down to make a carbine.

You could have a lot of fun reshaping yours to more closely resemble a true carbine stock.
