I'm of course all kinds of sidetracked, trying to make less of a big, fat mess of my Civil War photos. I'll come across something, dive into THAT rabbit hole for an entire night and that's it. I remember coming across this, having a slight shot at identifying the transports then thought ' Who am I kidding? ', looked up the brigades instead. :) I was just wondering how much of a waste of anyone's time it would be to figure out who is who in the line up. What is interesting to me might be a big snore for folks who have been at this forever, no worries if it's a silly request to begin with.

The only name I see is on the boat third from the left, and even that I can't quite make out. It looks a bit like "CITY OF BLAND" or "LADY OF ELAND" but neither of those make any sense. Where's the photo from?

i think its from here...

if it is Mower's/Tuttles Brigade, that brigade took part in the Red River Expedition...

but that boat name doesn't match any of the steamers used to transport those troops from Vicksburg to Red River...

(there is a city in Missouri called 'Bland' and one in Wisconsin called 'Eland'..and there were some Missouri troops being transported...so maybe they were showing their city pride?....also can't find a steamer named 'city of ....' that matches that.)

I believe the boat at center is WESTMORELAND, built at Brownsville, Pennsylvania in 1860. Expedition to Pittsbiugh Landing, Shiloh, April 1862; Yazoo River Expedition as a troopship, Dec. 1862; chartered Nov. 17 to Dec. 13, 1963; Feb. 12 to June 20, 1864; Dec. 8-18, 1864; Hired Feb. 5 to April 7, 1865; June 2-16, 1865. Burned at Cincinnati, Ohio, May 12, 1869, no fatalities. The others are going to be much harder, unless an LoC-style glass plate negative turns up.

Thanks for ALL of this, believe it or not will follow up exhaustively. The photo came ( I think ) from a site originating from the place which sent some of those men to the war, I thought I had it bookmarked but find I must not have. You do tend to come across awfully interesting photos on those sites, people closest to those who came home having kept track of this stuff through the 150 years. I'm crazy about this one, with whatever that is on wheels there in line waiting to be loaded.

Now rats, I'd thought perhaps with that published list maybe with Westmoreland identified, the rest would be in order, 'fore and aft', as it were. Hee. Westmoreland doesn't appear, maybe she was a fill-in? As part of the Red River campaign, this is going down as a big favorite photo, worth the time to poke at for awhile.

I can dock a boat, in a headwind, with whitecaps all the way to the shallows, on a lake between some pretty killer boulders on the island up there. Dad made us pull this stuff off before we were allowed to ever take a boat out by ourselves. I've just stopped being at all smug about this, looking at these giant ships elbow to elbow, having gotten there in a current, too. Wow.

Ah. ozarkscivilwar.org, I think I have that right.
