August 31 is National Trail Mix day. This is the perfect food to take when hiking. Some say it was first invented by two California surfers in 1968. They made it with peanuts and raisins as an energy food. However, there is reference to trail mix in the 1958 book, "The Dharma Burns" by Jack Kerouac. He has two of his characters mentioning trail mix as a planned meal in preparation for their hiking trip.

There are many types of trail mixtures. They are a great snack for after school children as well as for the hiker.

Have some trail mix today for the National Trail Mix Day.

Love trail mix. It makes a great late afternoon snack - grab a handful and munch and you're good till dinner usually!

As I really enjoy cereal I'm a big fan of simple recipe I came across years ago in the local paper of mixing your favorite granola with your choice of flake cereal (like Special K flakes or Corn Flakes), Honey Nut Cheerios with chopped pecans and M&Ms. You toss equal amounts in of all the ingredients except the M&Ms - you halve it and toss. You can store in an airtight container for about two weeks.
