I have terrible dental phobias and now that I've seen this thread (had to look don't you know) I'll have to have an extra glass of red wine just to get to sleep.

As it happens I have to have my teeth cleaned on Tuesday and I'm already in panic mode. Really bad, every time.

Please don't post these types of things in the future. Thanks.

I understand your anxiety, John. Perhaps like me, your phobia's stem from bad childhood memories when they gave no pain killer for anything but extractions. (That's right, nothing for drilling - not even for children!) I have a 2 PM cleaning scheduled for Tuesday myself but my hygienist is a real sweetheart. Always asking how I'm doing, ect., she really calms my nerves. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and hope all goes well for you.

I was very lucky to grow up with a wonderful dentist and good teeth. My problems started when some dentist thought it would be a good idea to put a rubber **** in my mouth. Instant panic!!!! and I have never gotten over it. I now sympathize with everyone who has to go to the dentist. No offense to any dentists or hygienists, I am sure there are some wonderful ones out there. somewhere....... maybe.......:help:

I will think of you too, @John Winn !
My significant other is a dentist and he would heavily protest that nothing has changed in the last 150 years. And indeed so many teeth can be saved now..
But living with a dentist has by no means changed my phobia. I can do professional cleaning and I'm not scared by pain, with me gagging is the worst. And it seems to get worse the older I get. I really consider hypnosys as probably in autumn I will have to have surgery... and then an implant most probably.
Ugh, let's think of something else...

I don't know enough about dental equipment, but I wonder why the toothkey is gone, but dental tooth forceps remain, as shown in legion para's photo of modern instruments. No tooth key there, but the forceps are close to the ones in the 1860 Tiemann's catalog below.

Was the toothkey an older instrument on its way out even in 1860? Does it have some specialized use even today?
