Today's photo is of a Confederate soldier wearing a gray frock coat, with a Georgia state belt buckle, and an eagle breast plate. He holds an old flintlock musket, with bayonet. If anybody has a photo suggestion for next week, feel free to message me. LOC.

Does it state on the back that the rifle is still a flintlock? I realize it was but alot of older rifles were converted to percussion. While it looks the part of a flintlock one cannot see the lock.So who knows, maybe the possibility is there.
It didn't say it was a flintlock, but thats my guess considering the band around the muzzle, and the old style bayonet.

I thought the LOC offered a version of their images without the frame covering it too. That might provide just enough additional information to know for sure. You never know when a gun might be a prop and not the soldier's issued firearm.

These images were a direct exposure onto coated metal or card, hence the 'mirror image' It is also the reason why buttons and belt buckles were often tinted or drawn over - to hide the mirrored lettering.
