Pvt. John D. Jones, of Co. I of the the 39th Mississippi infantry. He wears an overshirt, a sloch hat with the Mississippi star, he holds a musket, and has a pistol in his pants.

I wish we could ascertain the colors of his clothing. There were so many different styles of battle shirts. I have heard that old battle shirts left over from when proper uniforms were provided ended up as penitentiary prisoner issue clothing. I imagine they would stand out in those old shirts. Anybody have any idea of that is true or not?
Now, with that hat propped on this head like that, dod he really wear it as such or was it turned so they star holding up the brim on the side could be seen? Or maybe to thwart the shadow of that brim covering them subjects face? Or even a studio prop that doesn't actually fit the gentleman?
