Prof. David Blight relates the following in the words of Thomas Jefferson in the 1780s:

Northerners are cool, sober, laborious, persevering, independent, jealous of their own liberties, chicaning, superstitious, and hypocritical in their religion.
Southerners...are fiery, voluptuous, indolent, unsteady, independent, zealous of their own liberties.
This was in the 1780s. I wonder if these words found their way into popular culture and perhaps influenced the sections' views of themselves and each other. Note the jealousness/zealousness of their own liberties. Open Yale Courses
