George Thomas married a northern woman from central New York. He fought for the US.

Robert E. Lee expressed varying opinions on secession, but eventually adhered to the Confederate cause. That's encompasses quite a range of opinion of men from the middle eight states. Include hard core secessionists like Thomas Jackson, and that covers most of the spectrum
Its interesting that Mordecai and Thomas were highly ranked in their classes, (Mordecai ranked 1st) and were highly sought after ordnance officers. Artillery officers able to read the test results and propose new tests were a valuable asset. The loss of both Thomas and Mordecai hurt the Confederacy. Mordecai's son did serve with the US Army during the war. West Point, at least in some instances, was more of a nationalizing institution than has been observed in the past.
