Third National Confederate Flag

I'd have to review the timeline. Although there's no photographic evidence that I'm aware of, I think it's likely that the Confederate James River Squadron, at least, flew the Third National at the end of the war; possibly Charleston as well.
I read somewhere that more first nationals served on the field than the traditional battle flag even at the end of the war. I can't recall where I saw that information.

Great question.
I also have no answer.

My gut feeling is that it was too late in the ball game to worry about new flags.
I would agree. I can only recall a few instances of the stainless banner being used in the field, but not the third. It was adopted so late in the war that material was hard to obtain and getting it to units probably wasn't a top priority.

The Third National pattern, adopted March 4, 1865, shortened the white field and added a vertical red bar to the end of the Second National pattern flag. Very few, if any, of the Third National pattern flags saw service during the war, since General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia surrendered just a few weeks later at Appomattox.

I have never been a fan of the 3rd National. They should have stuck with the 1st or even made the CBF a national. And why by March 1865 would the Confederate Congress worry about a flag when they had a lot more important things to worry about?
They might have been out of peanuts and chewtobacco? Seriously, I recall that it was adapted because the stainless version looked too much of a white flag. So it had a political statement, never surrender, and maybe that's why they had time to consider that matter on so desperate times..

Good answer. I think they should have stuck with the 1st. And yes, they had a lot more problems to worry about!

I actually prefer the first national to either of the two other national flags.

I prefer the Bonnie blue myself. the first looks to much like the union when laying against the staff, the 2nd looks like they are surrendering, 3rd just too darn late.

The Third National Flag is commonly know as "The Blood-Stained Banner". I have also always liked the First National flag the most.

The Bonnie blue was occasionally used as a command flag in the CSN. Very late in the war Semmes proposed it's use as na Admirals's fl.ag, don't know if he got any response.
