Groups seek to preserve W.Va. Civil War graffiti

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — An expert says it would cost about $63,000 to preserve Civil War graffiti that soldiers left at a church in Berkeley County.

Workers cleaning the interior of Morgan's Chapel in Bunker Hill found soldiers' signatures, drawings, doodles and personal messages on the walls in 2008.

Architectural conservator Christopher Mills tells The Herald-Mail (http://bit.ly/I7Cnjz ) of Hagerstown, Md., that the original plaster walls are much as they were at the time of the war.

But he says stabilization of the church's north wall is needed immediately because it's likely to collapse.

Mills gave his estimate of the preservation cost Monday to the Berkeley County Landmarks Commission.

The commission is working with the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia to preserve the graffiti.

I am Episcopal, and I feel I am qualified to say that the church has gone in a unique direction in the last 20 years, so there's no telling what will be done here.
