Willis Shattuck (1846-1912).jpeg

I was thrilled to find the above image in the mail this week. The photograph is my Civil War veteran GG Grandfather, Private Willis Shattuck. His grandson, also named Willis Shattuck, sent it to me. That's right, he is the living son of Willis last child by a later marriage who was born in 1912, the year of Willis death. The resemblance of "old" Willis to my G Grandmother, his daughter, is unmistakable:

I can now add Pvt. Willis Shattuck to my collection of images of men of the 16th NYVI-reunited at last, digitally.

Congratulations. It's always good to celebrate one's roots.

Yeah, to a point, but there are some things there in your roots you just don't want to celebrate; e.g. my g-grandfather who was jailed for incest, or my 10x g-grandfather who was a juror in the Salem witch trials . "Study" and "acknowledge" everything, yes, but "celebrate" just the good parts. (Each person can decide what's good and what's not worth celebrating.)

Meanwhile, I'd say receiving this picture is worth celebrating.

I'm sorry, Navy, but I still say celebrate. We are the sum of history good, bad or indifferent and my beliefs teach me that all things that happen are part of God's plan. We may not understand but faith says they're for the best.
