THE OTTOMAN CONFEDERATE VESSELS

These 6 ships were all ordered for the CSN, but served in the Ottoman Navy. The ordnance they carried consisted of light weapons, the heaviest being 70pdrs.


Ottoman name: Hanya

Type: Iron hulled side wheel sloop. Crew 150
Paddles: two side-wheels, 1 single cylinder engine, speed 10knots
Dimensions:227.5ft PP x 27.6ft B x 6ft D, 816 tons.
Guns: 4 in Ottoman service
Builder: J & W Dudgeon, London, England
Ordered: 1863 Laid Down: 1863, Launched 1863, Trials 1863
History:
Launched as "Run Her" for the CSN, sold to the Osmanli Govt. Commissioned as Hanya. De commissioned in 1904 and broken up in 1909.
The name given is somewhat strange, I don't have an explanation.

Type: Iron hulled side wheel sloop.
Paddles: two side-wheels. Speed 10knots
Dimensions:237ft PP x 29ft B x 6.5ft D, 820 tons.
Guns: 12 in Ottoman service
Builder: Great Britain
Laid Down: 1865, Launched 1865, Trials 1865
History:
Ordered for the CSN, assigned name unknown. Sold to the Osmanli Govt. in 1867 Commissioned as Kandaya. Stricken in 1899.



Ottoman name: Arkadi

Type: Wooden hulled side wheel sloop. Crew 120
Paddles: two side-wheels. Speed 10knots
Dimensions:253ft PP x 26ft B x 6.5ft D, 767 tons.
Guns: 9 in Ottoman service
Builder: W Potter & Son, London, England.
Ordered 1865, Laid down 1866, trials 1866
History:
Ordered for the CSN as "Dream" sold to the Greek Govt. in 1867 as Arkadion.
Captured by Ottoman warships September 1867, commissioned as Arkadi, decommissioned 1896 and broken up 1905.

Type: Iron hulled side wheel sloop. Crew 150
Paddles: two side-wheels. 1 - 2cylinder engine, Speed 10knots
Dimensions:227ft PP x 26ft B x 7ft D, 765 tons.
Guns: 7 in Ottoman service
Builder: Great Britain
Ordered 1862, Laid down 1862, trials 1862.
History:
Ordered for the CSN, assigned name unknown. Sold to the Osmanli Govt in 1868,7, commissioned as Resmo decommissioned 1905 and broken up 1909.


Eser -i Nusret class


Ottoman name: Eser -i Nusret

Type: Iron hulled side wheel sloop. Crew 150
Paddles: two side-wheels. 1 - 2cylinder engine, Speed 13knots
Dimensions:285ft PP x 35ft B x 15ft D, 1,343 tons.
Guns: 8 in Ottoman service
Builder: Jones Quiggins, Liverpool, England
Ordered 1864, Laid down 1865, trials 1865.
History:
Ordered for the CSN, launched as Rosina. Sold to the Osmanli Govt in 1869. Decommissioned 1890.



Ottoman name: Medar-i Zafer

Ordered for the CSN. Launched as Ruby. Sold to the Osmanli Govt in 1869. Decommissioned 1890.

Arkadion was a blockade runner. She was captured by the Ottoman aviso Izzedin on August 20, 1867 near Crete. The second image shows her being towed by an Ottoman warship.

Certainly the last two were Jones Quiggins classic runners with a high top speed. The first four at first glance seem to be too slow and were constructed as warships. in Ottoman service they were classed as Aviso, lightly armed scouts and maids of all work.

By coincidence, a short article on J.W.Dudgeon shipyard by Frank C Bowen was printed on a facebook page earlier this week. The first vessel, "Hanya" was a "small sloop of war". Dudgeons went on to produce several near copies for other navies and the RN. Unfortunately it doesn't say what name she was launched under.

It appears they went out armed initially with British guns ,and some had additional or substituted Krupp weapons in Ottoman service.
