"The Key To Corinth" by Keith Rocco

Took delivery today and heading to the frame shop. Number 93/500. Been eyeballing it for awhile and a recent visit to Corinth spurred me to pull the trigger.

I bought Keith Rocco's book ' The Soldiers view ' a few years back and this is one of my favorite painting.

Battery Robinett was located about fifty yards away from where i am sitting. I gave an interpretive talk on the fighting up there about an hour ago. Best job in the world.
Oh, I have a copy hanging in my entry hall in our house downtown.

Lemme add that a picture of the print does not do it justice. Just took it out of the tube and looked at it up close and personal for the first time. It might be my favorite of the half dozen prints I have. If not favorite,it's second.

I was there on Sunday,June 4th. A return trip to Corinth is definitely on my list of wants. I bought the B&G back issues on Tupelo,Corinth and Shiloh at the Corinth NMP Visitor Center gift shop and I wanna come back starting in Tupelo and up through Corinth and Shiloh. My day visit on 6/4 was my first time at Corinth and Shiloh and I got a good taste but I want the whole enchilada,including field guides.

I wrote the B&G issue on Tupelo so I can vouch for the General's Tour in the back. Shiloh's chief ranger wrote the other two.

There are tour guides available for Corinth and Shiloh. They are private, not the licensed guides like at Gettysburg, but you can obtain a list by contacting the park.

I've always liked this one. Note that Rocco did make one mistake: he mistook the guidon of the 2nd Texas Cavalry for the 2nd Texas Infantry's battle flag. But other than that it is an excellent depiction.

Not that I know of. I wonder if Rocco has ever been contacted about that.

The battle flag of the 2nd Texas Infantry was in the hands of a private collector until recently. It was put on display during the Nashville Relic Show last year and is now slated to be placed on permanent display in a Texas museum. Sorry I'm not sure which one. This flag matches the description given in several post-war newspapers including the Dallas Morning News of November 9, 1894. The article was one of many arguing about what flag was captured at Battery Robinett; the 2nd Texas or the 9th Texas Cavalry. (It was the 9th Texas Cav).

In the thread referenced in post #10 of the posters noted the 1st National Flag to the left in the painting to which someone else made the claim that it was actually the flag of the 42nd Alabama. The 42nd Alabama started the charge on the right of the 2nd Texas but the regiments became hopelessly intermingled. The 42nd was carrying a battle flag very similar to the one here of the

2nd Texas.

This is the flag of the 9th Texas Cav that was captured at Corinth. It was white silk with a bluse cross.

There is an image that can be found of the 42nd Alabama's flag but I am uncertain if it was the one which was at Corinth. The history of the two Texas regimental flags is rock solid; they were definitely here. I was given quite a number of articles on these two flags from Greg Biggs who is one of the sharpest flag guys out there.

The bottom of the print has ©2004 on it as I recall when I took it outta the tube. Don't know how old Keith Rocco is or how long he may have been painting Civil War scenes at that time.
