they are not bored - they've just been told by their vets they'd be totally deaf in a weak or so

I think they really hate the whole tones and prefer the "stinky notes." That's why they're so bored; same old same old. What if all you got to hear was stuff in 4/4 ?

Now, if those buglers transposed even to a minor key that might have invigorated those horses a bit. If they had bugles capable of quarter tones that would really do the trick (think of bugle calls that sound like Arabic or Persian music). Yeah, they need stinky notes.

In reality, these horses are "old soldiers" and have just heard the call for chow.

Army chow, hence the less than enthusiastic response.
