John Brown was born June 11th 1844 in Indiana to parents John T and Cynthia Brown. While he was a small boy his parents moved to Vernon County Missouri and settled in virgin timber along Horse Creek near the Cedar County line. They are there in 1850 and 1860 census. The area was a frequent jayhawker target before the war.

At the end of the war he returned to Vernon County and built a home near the previous home from which his family had been driven, engaging in general farming and stock raising.
