I found it! Small but hopefully it's helpful.On second thought, putting my physicist's hat back on, perhaps the primitive emulsions they used had a frequency cut-off above the red. So IF the unexposed plate were white, then red light would keep it that way.

When the Range was active the booming of the big guns could be heard both at the site of Pelham's home and his grave (which I thought was a fitting tribute to the memory of the "Gallant Pelham").

It's very hard, almost indistinguishable - the only difference I have noticed is that silver tends to be slightly brighter because, I think, it reflects more light, versus gold/brass, which seems to absorb more, that's my theory anyway. If you have a shoulder board of a Lt. Col. of the Cavalry, you can almost not tell the sides and the insides of the shoulder boards aside, the only way to really tell what rank he is, would be by a slight hue shift between the gold sides and the silver oaksInteresting.
