The gallant Pelham

On second thought, putting my physicist's hat back on, perhaps the primitive emulsions they used had a frequency cut-off above the red. So IF the unexposed plate were white, then red light would keep it that way.

When Pelham was killed, his body was returned to Alabama and buried in the Jacksonville City Cemetery . He was born and raised in Alexandria near Fort McClellan's (named after George B.) Artillery Range which was named Pelham Range to honor John. When the Range was active the booming of the big guns could be heard both at the site of Pelham's home and his grave (which I thought was a fitting tribute to the memory of the "Gallant Pelham").

Interesting. What about gold vs silver oak leaves on a shoulder board? Any hope of distinguishing those?
It's very hard, almost indistinguishable - the only difference I have noticed is that silver tends to be slightly brighter because, I think, it reflects more light, versus gold/brass, which seems to absorb more, that's my theory anyway. If you have a shoulder board of a Lt. Col. of the Cavalry, you can almost not tell the sides and the insides of the shoulder boards aside, the only way to really tell what rank he is, would be by a slight hue shift between the gold sides and the silver oaks
 
Well, since we are told that blue eyes show up as "light" in these images, may we presume we are looking at "wet plate collodion" images?

Just to complicate things for me personally, I am partly red-green colorblind! (It makes driving fun. :smile:)
AFAIK the wet plate plate collodion process was the major photographic process during the 1860s and 1870s.

Aren't the stops lights red, yellow, green from top to bottom? Stop is on top.

Yes, the order of the lights is what saves my bacon. But back when I chartered sailboats from time to time, distinguishing salt and sun faded green from faded red buoys on a rolling greenish blue background was a much greater challenge. When returning to the dock, you need to keep the red channel markers on your right (i.e., to starboard), lest you might run aground, or worse.

I didn't know about the buoys. I worked for a number of years in a government radiation facility. One time a fellow worker I worked with for years asked me if a certain valve in a glove box was opened or closed. (A small red light was closed and a small green light was open.) Surprised, I told him it was closed. He said he was red-green color blind. I worked with him so many times and didn't know!

Red to your Left when you Leave for sea, Red to your Right when you Return from sea.
