Several companies of the first DC cavalry actually came from the state of Maine. These regiments were transferred and joined the first maine cavalry.

When did this happen?

August 27, 1864.

Originally (mid to late 1863), only 4 companies were organized for the 1st DC Cavalry. In the first few months of 1864, 8 additional companies were organized in Augusta, Maine to bring the regiment up to strength.

Back in 1887, Edward P. Tobie wrote an excellent history of the regiment: HISTORY OF THE FIRST MAINE CAVALRY 1861-1865 (1st Maine Cavalry Regimental History). It is still available for sale at a pretty steep price (well, for me it is steep) but I used it from Google Books; I'll bet that it may be on Internet Archive as well because it is out of copyright.

I have "Campaigns of the First Maine and First D.C, Cavalry" by Samuel Merrill printed in 1866. Cost me $165 about 20+ years ago. My GG Grandfather was in the 1st DC as a Sergeant but was thrown in the brig for threatening to whoop a LT Lakin. He got out 3 months later and got his Sergeant stripes back, maybe why he was left out of the book muster roles sadly. He should of waited until the war was over to smack that LT good! I have the Court Martial paper from the National Archives.

The first battle that the first DC cavalry fought for a was during the Wilson kautz raid in June 1864. They were part of the army of the James division of cavalry under August kautz. . The Union cavalry really got clobbered on that raid and that included the first DC cavalry. A lot of them were captured along with their Henry rifles. In September an attachment of the regiment y were assigned the job of guarding the stockyards of cattle at sycamore Church. The Confederate cavalry captured the cattle snd most of the first DC cavalry detachment y and their Henry's. This was known as Hampton's beef steak raid.

A lot o The ANV f Confederate cavalry troopers were armed with Henry's captured from the first DC cavalry at the end of the war but they had to use them sparingly because the South could not manufacture cartridges like those.

Ramald McKenzie took over the division in 1865. Do you know if your ancestor fought in those battles? In the closing days of the war?

He was sentenced to the "Brig" for 3 months at wars ended and sadly missed out on Appomattox.

My G-Grandmother's Great Uncle was the regimental commander (Lafayette C. Baker) of the 1st DC Cavalry Regiment. BTW, I have an original copy (printed in 1867) of a book called "History of the United States Secret Service" by General L. C. Baker I am willing to pass on to anyone for only the cost of packaging and shipping. The book's spine is in tatters but everything else is in descent shape.
