The First American Barbecue
If we except the occasional roast of a venturesome Pilgrim of Virginia settler by hostile Indians, the first record we have of a barbecue in America was in Charleston, shortly after Oglethorpe's landing. The information is furnished by the Azilian, in an article, " Barbecue," In the current issue.
Summer time is barbecue time in Georgia. The pits are smoking, the crowds gathering, and the hungry filling to repletion. Of unusual timely and historic interest is the article, which we produce.
Maybe South Carolina thought that she paid Oglethorpes band in advance for acting as a military frontier to that colony: she gave them a barbecue. This certainly was some compensation.
The good ship Anne brought over three hundred and fourteen passengers, and these were " among the present" at the barbecue in Charleston, where they first landed. As there were about two hundred other guests present, it would seem that it was not given altogether to the newly arrived immigrants.
At this barbecue were served four hogs, two beeves, eight turkeys, one hundred chickens and ducks, one hogshead of rum punch, one hogshead of beer and one barrel of wine. The reported for this occasion states that": nobody was drunk' - which was truly remarkable. We are without information as to the number of acute indigestion cases, but there must have been "a-plenty" if the people form debtor's prison after three months at sea were turned loose on this dinner. It was like the Georgia Barbecue of the present day.

(And let's not forget the Comanches).
