Saw a history channel show that said the CSS Alabama sank some ships off NY. They even planned on sailing into NY harbor and setting ships ablaze. The CSS Alabama's Capt. was very bold !!!
Anyone care to elaborate on the subject ? Where could I get a map showing the approx. locations of the ships sunk by the Alabama ? Reccommend any books ? Thanks for any info.

Around Oct of 62 he planned an attack. He wanted to burn some vessels and shell Manhattan. Then get out fast before morning. He started towards New York and caught several ships along the way but a cyclone hit and did moderate damage to the Alabama. That and hearing from his Chief Engineer he only had 4 days of coal left in his hold made him change his mind.
His book Memoirs of a Service Afloat and Wolf of the Deep are both great reads on the Alabama. On a side note my episode tonight is the first of three on Semmes and the Alabama. Im swamped with to-do's so it might not go on the website till 11 or 12am

Semmes might have snuck in, perhaps under cover of darkness, but getting out would be a bit trickier once the forts on each side of the Narrows were alerted. New York was a major port and navy base, and there were many Union warships comparable to or more powerful than the Alabama. There's a good chance whatever ships Semmes destroyed in the harbor would be his last.
