Higher tariffs could be easily countered in the US Senate if the Southern states did not secede
only for another 2 years or so. think long term...they did. They also could have preserved slavery forever if they stayed in and ratified the corwin amendment....shots down the idea that they left to preserve slavery....as it was better preserved staying in. hmmm. an unamendable amendment to further protect slavery...and they left anyway.

Contrarily, the fact that the Corwn Amendment was even proposed as a possible solution to the crisis shows us that protection and expansion of slavery was the issue.

An issue...yes. Driving issue..maybe. it is conventional wisdom that slavery was the main issue. But things dont add up. I have stumbled onto an 800 page book of collected contemporaneous chronological writing, newspaper clipping, speeches and the like that i am reading currently...gives a "in real time" experience. Enlightening...anyway, good night
