Higher tariffs could be easily countered in the US Senate if the Southern states did not secede
only for another 2 years or so. think long term...they did. They also could have preserved slavery forever if they stayed in and ratified the corwin amendment....shots down the idea that they left to preserve slavery....as it was better preserved staying in. hmmm. an unamendable amendment to further protect slavery...and they left anyway.
