The Confederate Army.

I've been doing a LOT of reading lately about Lee's army in 1862, and was struck by the fact the Confederate Congress didn't authorize organizations larger than divisions (which fact has already been mentioned by jackt62); a situation circumvented by Lee in Virginia with the creation of what he called "commands" .

James, the reason there was no Confederate corps organization prior to Oct '62 was simple---Jeff Davis. He did not want them. Only after Lee was successful in the summer campaigns of '62 and after considerable time in convincing Davis of the need for same did the formal corps organization emerge during Lee's October reorganization of the ANV. I get into all the specifics of this in the "Robert E. Lee at War" multi-volume series.

Regards,
