I happened on this image of an unidentified Brigadier General at NARA (here), and was immediately struck by his medals.
The medal on the right appears to be a British Crimean War service medal with a single battle/campaign clasp. Oddly, the reverse side of the medal is shown, with the obverse (with the portrait of Queen Victoria) turned back.
The other medal appears to be a French Legion of Honor:

The combination was not unknown; here's a set of medals of Royal Navy Admiral Henry Wandesforde Comber (1821-1903) that includes both (center pair):
So who is this (presumably)Limey Frenchy?
