One of the things that really surprised me when I toured the battlefield with our lost honored member Prroh was the actual elevation change from the Union side of the bridge to the other. I stood where Confederate soldiers were shooting down at the bridge and was surprised anyone ever got across.

Yes, I've been there, too. It's remarkable pictures never show the sharply higher ground on the Confederate side of the bridge. You have to see it to believe it.

That General Burnside ordered the advance was suicidal for everyone but him.
