"Texas Rising"

This looks interesting:

I looked it up on IMDB, and the cast is interesting -- Bill Paxton as Sam Houston, Kris Kristofferson as Andrew Jackson, and Rob Morrow as James Fannin. (Morrow does conflicted indecision really well.) The cast includes some lesser-known figures as well, including David Burnet, Sidney Sherman, Big Foot Wallace, Jack Hays, Buffalo Hump, and Juan Seguin.

I also noticed that the characters of Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett are not included in the cast listing online. I don't know if that's an oversight, or reflects a decision to step out from the traditional way of telling the Alamo story. If it's the latter, it will be interesting to see how they pull it off.

The IMDB summary says it tells the story of the creation of the Texas Rangers, but the Alamo, Goliad and the Texas Revolution are (forgive me, Molly Ivins!) really just backstory to that. The story of the Texas Rangers needs more Jack Hays and Buffalo Hump and less Santa Anna and James Fannin.

I know it's the Ice Road Truckers History Channel, but I can hope (at least until Memorial Day).
Im looking forward to this show. I do hope it is true to history and not more fiction than history. I live in hope.:smile coffee::smile coffee:

I don't know enough Texan history to critique this program as people in NJ don't pay a whole lot of attention to the history of the Southwest but if it is put together by the people who made the likes of Turn or the Sons of Liberty (people in NJ are much more aware of Revolutionary War History than that of Texas) it will be garbage of the kind that smell so bad we will just want to get it out of the house before it pollutes the atmosphere. What bothered me about the Rev War programs was that it would have been a simple matter to have gotten the history correct, not expensive, not difficult, just a bit more careful. Why they can't be just a bit more careful is beyond me.

FWIW, the founder of the Alamo Society is from NJ.

Yeah, I was just re-reading to be sure I was right. (I left that part out because we're about to get hit by a doozy and was in the midst of moving the car, bringing in Colonel Pointer, and shutting all the curtains in case the glass gets busted out of the windows. And there's a hook echo. Whoopee. I hate Spring.)
Know what you mean Nat,
When I was at Washington-on -the-Brazos recently the sky got black as all get out and it came a frog strangler in no time flat then it was gone as fast as it came.

Does he still live there? If he moved to Texas I can understand his interest since if I moved to Texas (not a bad idea if I could swing it) I would also immerse myself in the regional history. Heck, if I moved to the state of Washington I'd join the Nootka and Sasquatch Preservation Society and throw a potlatch every February 30th.

He still lives in NJ. Comes to San Antonio for the Alamo High Holy Days every year.

I saw an interview on one of the morning shows yesterday with (I think) "Houston" and the girl who plays Emily Morgan - they seem to be playing her up quite a bit, and the film clip they ran was all her & "Santa Anna". I thought the little I saw looked alright, but considering the source, I don't hold out much hope.

Steve Austin. Karankawas and mountains. What the.......................................................................................

No. Why is that Indian's horse wearing a breast collar?

Good gravy. This is the biggest hot mess of dog poop I've seen yet. And it's only been on 21 minutes, including title and intro.

What?????????????????????????????????????????????? Susannah Dickenson was attacked by Karankawas in the mountains east of San Antonio? Goodness.

I think I'm getting a migraine.
