Sword Sabre Identification

Hello all,

Looking for some help here. Trying to identify a light sword or sabre. The scabbard and hadke appear to be period. But I typically see a hand guard. I have been searching but have yet to discover any other examples. I am sure I am looking in the wrong places.
I hope the pictures are clear enough to help with identifying this item. I have carefully looked and see no names, letters, numbers or any other identifying makers mark.
Thank you in advance for all the groups help !

Welcome from the Fort Sumter and the Fredericksburg forums.

I'm not too knowledgeable so I can't help with identification but the experts will be along soon who can.

Interesting sword. Its not US or CW and with the grip and tip of blade I'm leaning Asian especially Japanese.

This is a Japanese police sword, model 1906?, for patrolmen and sergeants. Since it was used by patrolmen on their beat, it has a tempered blade (swords for high level police officials were not tempered and were plated. The shape and the lack of ears on the back strap along with a lack of five-petal cherry blossoms tips you off that it is police. Army swords had a knuckle bow and cherry blossoms with 10 petals. The police badge on the back strap next to the pommel only appears on swords for patrolmen and sergeants. Another tip-off that it is Japanese is the shape of the blade tip which is similar to a samurai sword. A sword knot was threaded through the hole attached to the pommel and the hole at the end of the quillon. This probably represents a veteran's bring-back after World War 2 or the Korean War.

My info comes from chapter 24 of "Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945" by Jim Dawson

I'm glad I clicked in. It's interesting to read about this sword, and I think it's quite beautiful. If it were mine, I'd be proud to own it!
