Generally speaking, the manner it was re-wrapped and the material. Sometimes it takes a real close look. Wire wind, leather appearance, seam/overlap.

And sometimes the pommel cap and tang can be clues, as they may be ground flatter than their original shape if the sword hilt was taken off and then reassembled.

So let's say that a sword grip was rewrapped, and it was well done? How big a deal is that, if the rest of the hilt, the blade, and the scabbard are all in good shape? I am relatively new to sword collecting, so I'd appreciate hearing some opinions on this.

Well I purchased the wire from Tom Nardi at sword restoration and have wrapped several Rev War and ACW swords. I have 2 Ames 1859 M1860 cav sabers, 1 I wrapped the wire and I can't tell the difference between them. For a rewrap of some Rev War swords I mailed to him to do it and he adds patina and they look great. It's simply restoring the sword to what it looked back then. If you collect 1960s Corvettes but don't have tires for them, are you going to get tires or leave them up on cinderblocks?

Acknowledged. My watchmaker restores my pocket watches to as close to factory new condition as he can get them for me, too. I guess my real question was: When considering a purchase, how much does a rewrapped grip affect the value of the item, assuming the rewrap is well done?
