I have a pair of trousers which suffers from more closet shrinkage than other trousers made from the same pattern. (It's the fault of the fabric, not my darling wife's cooking. Really.) I go without suspenders for this pair, but use a belt fashioned from the sling from a Springfield musket. A pair of blanket/overcoat straps also makes a quite usable belt.
The belt trick is also something to remember when you're in the field and realize you didn't pack suspenders before leaving home.
