Anyone know about this lost surrender table from the Siege? Was this lost to history? I never knew that there was one. Clipping was from 1888.

I'm guessing some disgruntled former POW from the garrison dragged it out back and burned it. 😃
Yes it may have been burned at the 4th of July BBQ that began afterwards. ( I think about the furniture that got bought/ stole from the house in Spotsylvania .)

Was there a surrender table for Vicksburg?

Thought the surrender of Vicksburg was accomplished by way of offer and acceptance via an exchange of letters (and notes) between Grant and Pemberton.

(See 'OR': Vol. 24, Part I, pp 284-86)

He's talking about formal surrender you know paperwork and all. Wonder where the original documents are? Read OP

I'm still wondering whatever happened to all the pieces of the surrender tree and Douglas the Camel that were taken as trophies. Surely at least one of each still survives?
I've never heard of a formal table either.

I also thought the negotiations between Grant and Pemberton were an exchange of letters before the two met under the tree
for a verbal agreement to the terms.

Regarding Douglas the camel, I'm sure some of his bones survived, but I think most of Douglas ended up on a Confederate BBQ grill.

Maybe that's where this slogan began....
