This agrees with my unscientific assessment of opinions expressed by the enlisted soldiers at Vicksburg. I found the men divided into three equal camps:

1) supported on principle
2) supported as means to an end
3) did not support

The officers, of course, supported it 100% because they knew they would be sent home if they did not 😃
