Support for Emancipation Proclamation

This agrees with my unscientific assessment of opinions expressed by the enlisted soldiers at Vicksburg. I found the men divided into three equal camps:

1) supported on principle
2) supported as means to an end
3) did not support

The officers, of course, supported it 100% because they knew they would be sent home if they did not

In Clayton Butler's book on Southern Unionists, at least in the three regiments he was looking at, he found they largely fell into the second camp there.

I'm wondering if what state the soldier was from was reflected in any way by how he voted?
