Storing Your Pepperboxes

No gentlemen, not in the cupboard! I found this neat article about period pepperbox revolver holsters, and it's proving quite fascinating. The pepperboxes, at least the later models, have a reputation as pocket pistols (but then big pockets were in at the time!). Until today, I'd never seen a pepperbox in a proper belt holster.

Extra shout outs to the guy who went West with a Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword (on original belt, no less!) and a pair of pepperboxes! Similarly, the gent who's weapons of choice where a tomahawk, pepperbox, and a Hall rifle. Exceptional taste in period weapons, but then I may be biased a bit :inlove:.

Interesting as I bought a replica single-shot Dueling Pistol. I can tuck in into my Belt but that is uncomfortable---and probably not safe. I want something to hold it and yet allow the barrel and the Lock to be exposed and free.

I found a way to store/display my original .31 cal Boot Pistol.

If you happen to be hanging out with Julio down by the schoolyard, then steer clear of Rosie. She is the Queen of Corona.

You know, you sometimes see holsters that look like that in period woodcuts (did I post an example? Of course not!). I always thought they were simply badly drawn or only meant to suggest holsters. Perhaps the artist was drawing a pepperbox holster all along.

Thanks for posting that, the first time I have seen such a holster as well. The thing that strikes me is how common it is to see a pepperbox versus having never seen a holster.

Very Interesting article. Thanks for posting. The saddle bag with holsters it pretty neat.

As the article mentioned, Allen and Thurber produced a "dragoon" model of their six-barrel pepperboxes. 36 caliber with six-inch barrels. I guess they'd be the "horse pistols" of the pepperbox world. I'd always wondered if saddle-holsters were made for those "dragoon" models, and now I know thanks to this thread
