Each reenactor/living historian has different expectations. Some are happy being mainstream and others are happy being a campaigner. To each his or her own. I spent many years being a hardcore progressive.

Little things can add very much to an impression. Have you ever considered a hand carved pipe? Pipes were very popular during the Civil War.

Randy Ubben is the only person making Civil War period pipes in the United States. He uses period materials and techniques to makes these pipes. As with anything custom made, they are not cheap and are well worth the wait.

There are many Civil War images of pipes being smoked.
