I recently ran across a notation about my GG GF related to his death. In the Jan 1869 W&A RR annual report of operations to the Georgia Senate is a report of a "List of Sundry Claims vs. W&A RR" that are pending. The list included RHODIA Northcutt, Residence - Atlanta; lawsuit for $20,000. "Damages for killing husband - A. G. Northcutt, at Station 13, C. R. R., being in charge refugee stock, W. & A. R.R. Suit brought in the Fulton Co., Superior Court.

Until I found the above info, all I knew was that A. G. Northcutt was "killed on the Central RR during the war, 1864", according to his brother. Another brother stated A. G. was killed "near Macon, GA."

Does anyone know where Station 13 of the Central RR was located or any history for this station in 1864? If I can at least narrow down the date I plan to hire someone to search the court records.

Station numbers were rarely published since they were mostly used by the RR itself, not the public (who went by station names). However, starting at Savannah, the 13th named station is Ogeechee.

I have recorded several hundred Confederate railroad accidents, but do not have one that matches you lawsuit. If you solve your mystery, please let me know the details so I can add it to my site. (www.csa-railroads.com)

I could use a bit of clearing up, as Dave says no reported wreck is with that station. Your Northcutt relation was in charge of refugee stock, and you say his death occurred in 1864. Is it possible while he was performing duties on the railroad that he was killed by a refugee or some other character, and not by an accident?
There should be ample official records on Dave's site regarding Sherman's march and the conflicts in that area. If I remember right, the confederates were having to retreat quickly from station to station as Sherman advanced. Reports of this can be found among both sides. Thanks,
Lubliner.
