Hello friends, it's been a while. Nothing personal, just busy, you see. :)

It's been in the works for a while now that I will be moving to Pennsylvania soon (Thursday if nothing stupid happens), and I'll be living 1 hr. 45 min. Away from Gettysburg. I'll be taking a job up near Reading, but will be living near Pottsville. Anyways, I think that I'll be able to make the pilgrimage when I'm not working, and I would love to do it in the Spring. When exactly is the best time for it though? Living in Kentucky, we have peach trees and red buds bloom around March 28th - April 7th on average. Daffodils bloom in Late February here. What's the story for Adams county Pennsylvania? I'd love to take photos of the Peach orchard in bloom.

Thanks for the help guys, I hope to invade the North soon!

I'm so sorry you're moving here. Most of us want to get OUT!

One thing you'll find about spring here is...it's not pretty. It's chilly and wet. Then it gets warm(and usually still wet), then cold, warm, hot, then cold again. It's usually always raining. Yeah things bloom, but nothing too special to see IMO. Though the peach orchard might be nice.

If you are going to live near Pottsville, I live 4 miles South of there. The Burg is 100 miles from where I live Normal drive time is 1 hr 45 min. Gettysburg in the Spring is a great time to visit.

You had me laughing out loud.
Aint that the truth.
Counting down the days.

Well it seems to me that nobody here really likes PA, makes me wonder what I'm getting myself into.

I swear I'm moving just for the bottle digging and relic hunting.
I'll stand and put in a good word for PA. Suburb Philly here, and my wife is from the Harrisburg area. Really easy drive from Pottsville to Gettysburg and all main roads.

@Ethan S. Well, not actually living there but pretty close, Maryland, I go there very frequently and love it. I almost moved there when I retired but, unfortunately that didn't work out. Compared to where I grew up, L.A., all of it that I am familiar with is pretty nice. Of course, some people like Fords and some people like Chevrolets, as the old saying goes.

Don't get me wrong, I do actually like PA...I think I'm just tired of it. I grew up, and still live in, the Pocono Mountains, which is a tourist area. Especially now(skiing is big here). I'm pretty sure if I moved somewhere else, I'd definitely miss it. It's home after all.

A few things to keep in mind, that you may not be aware of, is that we do have some quirky laws. For instance, you can't purchase liquor just anywhere, you need to go to a state run liquor store. Beer and wine can be had from all the usual places, however. There's others, but besides the previously mentioned tax system, that's probably the biggest one that will affect your life on the regular. You're also not allowed to do certain types of business on a Sunday, such as buying a car....yeah we have some quirks. Most of this is not new either, it's stuff that has been for a long while and is kept out of tradition more than anything.

I hope you enjoy it when you get here!

I believe Pottsville was a mining area back during the war, and one of the first call recruits to come through Baltimore a day before the riot when the Massachusetts men went through. I read a book "The Diary of Captain Wren" that was pretty good. He was assigned to return in 1863 after his enlistment time expired, to either recruit, or guard the draft recruiters. There was a dangerous threat from the men in that area, assaulting the recruiters, and defying the draft. You should have good Library references for your local area.
Lubliner.

I'll have to take some photos of the cemetery behind my house. A lot of Civil War vets are buried near the church. One of them is a medal of honor winner.

It wasn't my first option, but then I realized that I'd have a place to live, and a higher paying job, so it isn't a total loss. I won't like the cold though.
Also, Eastern PA is an AWI fanatic's dream. Valley Forge, Brandywine, Washington Crossing. Hop to New Jersey for Monmouth. While there, fill up your gas tank, because they pump it for you in NJ.
