Springfield 1842

[Lead Snowstorm]

Today I was *finally* able to fill a very big hole in my collection, and a hole relevant to the Civil War at that. I'd been looking for a good 1842 for quite awhile, and finding that the Venn diagram of what I would consider "reasonably priced" and "decent condition" didn't have a great deal of overlap. A lot of mismatched lockplate and barrel tang dates; a lot of vise marks on the barrels; a lot of cracked/cutdown stocks. One piece both nice and reasonably priced, an 1850's dated/rifled and sighted musket, got away from me a couple of years ago because I was kinda sorta looking for an early dated, smoothbore example. Knowing what I know now, two years later on, I would've snatched that one up...but then a smoothbore, Mexican War-dated example finally did pop up and I snagged it. It was maybe 50% more than I'd been looking to pay at most, but the combo of date, condition (not pristine, but right up my alley as a 'fine attic' example - what an oxymoron, huh?) and my weariness to go on searching made me jump.

I think this piece probably makes it into my top three of US muskets from the muzzle-loading, flintlock/percussion era.

Very Nice! This same musket is a hole in my collect too. Agree with all you said, prices seem to be much higher than condition lately. I look for those matching dates too, which seriously fits limits the examples that I'm willing to purchase if possible. The search continues!
