"When Steven Spielberg takes the rostrum Monday in Gettysburg, his appearance will be a test run for an even larger production planned for November 2013.

"The Academy Award-winning director will be the keynote speaker at the annual Dedication Day ceremony marking the 149th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address."

It was a whopping big crowd. Control got a little hairy at times. I was helping to keep the press in the right place. Good lesson I learned that you can get by looking at the second link- if you don't want to be in any of the photos, stand next to the photographer.

Spielberg was quite personable, I heard from a guy who did the wreath-laying with him. I only caught snatches of his speech because I was redirecting several of the press back into the media corral. I remember he spoke highly of today's "citizen soldiers" and got a round of applause for that. Mentioned how lucky he was because whenever he wanted to get a fresh taste of Abraham Lincoln he had Daniel Day Lewis on speed dial.

Doris Kearns Goodwin also spoke about history being more fascinating because of the stories of the people involved.

It was gray and cold-the sun came out just as Spielberg was leaving. At least 5000 showed up. Pretty good crowd except for a handful of minor problems making things a little hairy once or twice.

Rob,
Wish I could have made it today. Good to see that many folks were able to.
In what capacity were you helping out? Park watch, LEO, etc.

As one who prefers to be a witness to history rather than part of it, I'll remember your advice about standing beside the photographer :)

I enjoyed the whole ceremony. But Speilberg got what he was there to do. Who he was there to talk about. He did an outstanding job. Stuck around for a long time signing programs and posing for pictures.

It's working, bringing history alive. My daughter was there, which astonished me. She goes to Gettysburg College but doesn't stick her nose outside of her lab long enough to notice the battlefield-ever. She wasn't there for the whole 'star' thing, wanted to experience the anniversary this way ( astonished me again ).

' Lincoln ' is working, I think. Speilburg has managed, is managing to connect the dots for an awful lot of people for whom the past had no real relevency before.
