I am working on a PowerPoint presentation for my Civil War roundtable and am trying to get information on "Special Orders No. 153, War Department, Adjutant General's Office." This is a reference made by my g-g grandfather in a letter dated April 29, 1864 in which he states "I have been promoted 1st Lieutenant and adjutant of a regiment, composed of the old 2nd Penn Artillery by Special Orders No 153, War Department, Adjutant General's Office. This happened April 20th. 1864." The only direct result I got on a Google search was a photo facsimile from the State Of Tennessee Library that is dated April 24, 1864. That date is 4 days after his referenced promotion. In addition, there is no indication in the reference notes that this Special Order No. 153 has anything to do with the order referenced in the letter. Rather, it concerns Tennessee regiments.
My question is, how can I get a copy or a transcript of this order? Does an archive exist listing Federal Special Orders issued by the U.S War Department Federal Adjutant-General's Office during the Civil War? If so, how do I find it and if not does anyone have a suggestion how I can get this information?
Here is the link to the document I got in my search:
