I found the following blurb in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, April 8, 1881:

"In two places in the columns of the Gazette of yesterday it was stated that Gen. McPherson was killed at Shiloh. As a matter of fact, the lamented soldier was killed two years later between Resaca and Atlanta. The unveiling of a statue of the General on the anniversary of the battle of Shiloh was the cause of confusion in the reportorial mind."
