Recent discussions inspired me to take a look at what was happening in slave states regarding the percentage of total population that were slaves. It is my observation that as the percentage of slaves in a slave State relative to total population drops, the probability that the State will flip to free increases. The political forces of anti-slavery simply overwhelm the political forces of slavery.
The result is this table of percentages. The columns are the percent slave of slave States to 1860, trendline estimates for 1870-1890, a figure indicating if the trend was an upward-the percentage of slaves were increasing(a positive number), decreasing(a negative number) and an evaluation of the increase or decrease the higher the number the greater the increase or decrease. A comparison to the average percentage of slaves in a slave State and a ranking based on the percentage of slaves in a slave State.
The spreadsheet is a work in progress but can be viewed at Link.
