Slang terms

In my 2x great grandfather's diary of 1864, he refers to having "a pull of bourbon". Is this a slang term for an amount or something else? This forum has been so helpful to me. Thank you all for your responses.

My Father in Law used to say, "Have a snort"…referring to having a swallow of booze..

In England a barman at a pub "pulls" pints or larger measures of bitters, lagers,ciders, etc.
This comes from the fact that a lever must be pulled toward the server to fill the glass.
This term does not apply to whiskey, other spirits, wine, etc.
