Silver Cloud, along with St. Clair, was one of the first new civilian steamboats brought to Texas after the war, in the fall of 1865. Both boats had served as Union tinclads during the war, a fact that was discretely omitted from the news coverage that accompanied the arrival of these two boats. Silver Cloud was snagged and sunk on Buffalo Bayou, near Houston, in October 1866.
Silver Cloud was also one of the first Union vessels to reach Fort Pillow after it was taken by Forrest's troops. Two of Silver Cloud's officers, Acting Master William Ferguson and Acting Master's Mate Robert S. Critchell, left detailed accounts of what they found.
