In several instances during the ACW, Confederates seized money from Union ships (raiders) and Union communities (Jubal Early), hundreds of thousands of dollars. Has there ever been an accounting of these funds? Were they in the form of gold or currency? Did Early turn every dime over to the CS treasury? Did other seizures fail to make it to Richmond? I assume that Confederates didn't have any money to be seized by Union forces. I know that the losses from the Alabama were indemnified eventually by H.M. Government. How about what Early did?
