Shot put?

Complete nube here. My kids found these buried here in Jefferson City, MO. They look too be in too good of shape, suspecting shot put or replicas? Thank you for any help.

Hoping to get some accurate feedback.

The bad news is that they are shotputs, the slotted openings were to add or deduct weight, the good news is that they are nice shotputs.

I found a 12 pound shot put one time and was so excited thinking it was a 12 pound shot. It even said 12 pounds on it. Are there any numbers on your shot puts indicating their weight?

A shot is to be put. Shot put is an event in track and field competititions. That is, a competitor tries to put the shot farther down range than other competitors.

It is a great site! I will just offer that unexploded ordinance is a fragile thing - it's loaded with unstable chemical compounds that can go boom-boom long after it's buried. I'd have the kids know to leave it undisturbed and call the local non-emergency number for the police/fire department. They should check it out before the CivilWarTalk forum does!

I did the shot put in high school, another kid on the team once asked me if I knew how much a 12 lb. shot weighed. He was completely serious. I still laugh when I think of it.

The very first civil war cannon ball I ever purchased turned out to be a gate weight, used by farmers to keep gates closed. At least it was a cheap lesson.
