I can vaguely remember my favorite trip when I was in boy scouts. I can't hardly remember what it was because it was so long ago, but I'm pretty sure it was Shiloh Tennessee and the memorial there. I remember camping out there and it was definitely my favorite trip we ever took. I was probably 13 at the time. That's when I fell in love with the Civil War. We also went to another Civil War memorial where we hiked through an open pasture, but I just can't remember what it was. I believe it was somewhere in Georgia. It was so cool, and I remember getting scared because I thought there were ghosts of soldiers walking past my tent at night. Just wanted to share one of my first and favorite memories of the Civil War.

My first trip was a graduation present to myself before I graduated from college. It wasn't far from home but I had never been there, so I decided to go see it before I departed for the NorthEast with the Air Force. I'm glad I did because New England has a lot of history but I wanted to remember my "routs". I thought it was so cool to be able to view the 2 days of the battle by the color and shape of the markers.

Then one day I was riding through a small New England town with some new Yankee friends when I saw a statue in the town green wearing a kepi. I commented: "Look, there is a Confederate monument."
I wasn't ignorant but that is what they were called back in Mississippi.

Went to Gettysburg for my first battlefield visit. Dad said it was a park so i envisioned a field surrounded by the usual wrought iron fencing. Boy am glad i was wrong ;)

I went to Gettysburg when I was 12 or 13. I'm 62 now and unfortunately I don't remember a lot of it. OK I don't remember most of it. Someday I hope to get back.
We're going to try to take a 3 day weekend and visit Shiloh this year. I've been to a few of the Virginia battlefields but never one of the western battlefields. Three years until I retire then I plan on visiting quite a few.

I grew up an hour's drive from Shiloh and my family went there quite often on weekend outings. This was when the main entrance to the park was the Corinth Road (which is now blocked off) and the hotel at the entrance was still open. I also did the Boy Scout thing there and had my first introduction to poison ivy.

I cannot remember my first trip to Shiloh. I too grew up about an hour from there, but better than that... we had a fishing camp on the river and would lock thru Pickwick dam in small fishing boats, and go there by water... those trips really stand out in my memory. I continue to go there anytime I am in Florence and if the fish ain't bitin, its"lets run up to Shiloh"

I'm not a big fan of Shiloh. I've there a dozen or so times and every single time I go it rains on me. I really don't understand why but I've never been there that it wasn't raining. A beautiful park I'd just like to see it dry once.

On my first CW battlefield trip we took our son just befor he went into the U.S.A.F,. took in Donaldson, Shiloh, Where my CWT namesake was in the thick of things with the Third Iowa VOLs within 3 weeks of his enlistment, Then to Corinth, and on to Vicksberg.
As my first visit to a major battlefield I was v ery impressed with it, however that wasalmost 20 years ago and I had a hard time trying to get the flow of the battle in my head with the roads going around all over.
I hope the new film is a little clearer or they have a overlay map of the stages of the battle,by now.
