My GG grandfather was asked to sit and write of his War experience in the early 20th century. We still have it.
He remembered being cold and hungry and being shot, 45 years after the fact. He never claimed to remember who stood near whom on a certain date, let alone what General said which to whom.
Some of the quotes in the original post are hilarious insofar as a person could remember who said what or who stood where, a near half-century after the fact.
But that's just me.
